I highly recommend Elke Savala for color consulting. She took on the project of selecting exterior colors for my large, Cape Cod-style, home. Not only were the colors she suggested perfect, but so were the finishes. And, the arrangement of colors on the home were optimised to its style.

I had wanted my home in the green family. Elke was very careful about undertone, and ensuring that the three shades of green chosen harmonised with each other based on undertone, but still offered significant visual interest. She was able to select multiple combinations based on my preferences, and was helpful in terms of knowing when a color that looked good on a swatch would not work, visually, on a large area of my home.

Ultimately we went with a rich, dark greyish-green for the lower half and the front, a lighter but still rich shade for the upper sides, and a still lighter shade for the niches–front, back and side–to give them some contrast and interest.

Everything was thoroughly discussed and addressed, for example window sills and framing, doors and trim. Elke’s suggestions about finish–for example flat versus eggshell–were essential to the project because, of course, this has an impact on how color will appear in the final analysis and in terms of functional elements, like wear and tear.

The challenge of selecting a grey color for the cement porch and surrounding walkways that worked with the greens on the home was an interesting one. Elke came up with a number of solutions that are in harmony with the house colors yet provided a nice contrast that made the home look even better. She did this by ensuring that the undertone of the grey was not blue and harmonises with the grey greens on the home, or more or less neutral.

Elke was a pleasure to work with. She came up with solutions based on my preferences for a home that I wanted to “pop” yet be easy on the eye, partly because of my visual disability, which meant I had to avoid certain colors.

Elke has a good eye for color. An artist’s eye, and one that is able to scale up to how colors play on large surfaces. While there are many color consultants out there with the same education and training as Elke, much of what she offers cannot be taught and appears to be innate.
Many, many people who walk past my home comment on how beautiful it is!
